I am the NSW Greens member for Balmain in the NSW parliament. I have assisted thousands of local residents with a wide range of issues. I am focused on cleaning up politics, a more liveable community and a caring society.
In the face of corruption and influence peddling in the NSW Parliament, Jamie stands for something different. He is not subject to the dictates of Sussex Street nor is he beholden to the big end of town.
He stands as a strong independent voice working for the people and the environment of his electorate and the wider community.
His parents emigrated to Australia in the mid 1960s where his father took up work as a fitter in the Balmain ship yards. Before coming to Australia his father was a merchant sailor working in the engine room. His mother was born and bred in Liverpool in England where her father was a dock worker. Jamie is a proud product of public education and has an undergraduate degree from Macquarie University in Economics and a Masters of Economics (Political Economy) from the University of Sydney.
Jamie has lived in Thailand while studying at Thammasat Univeristy and has a particular interest in Burma, being a founding member of the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma. He speaks conversational Burmese and has traveled extensively throughout the country and the region.
At a local level he is passionate about the heritage streetscapes in our community, citing the destruction of many buildings as one of the reasons he entered local politics.
He is always putting residents first and standing up for what matters to ensure our communities are sustainable and liveable. He believes in a strong public transport system, affordable housing, excellence in public education, small business and renewable energy.
He is a powerful and experienced advocate for the local community after serving for over 12 years years on Leichhardt Council including two terms as Mayor.
Jamie's track record
Jamie fights for transparency and accountability in government. He stood up against the Liberal and Labor parties when they voted together to deliver Packer his casino at Barangaroo.
He is a fighter for the rights of public housing residents and has successfully worked to deliver maintenance and upgrades.
Jamie has been active in a wide range of range of successful campaigns including the successful effort to save Callan Park from development, the light rail extension to Dulwich Hill and free travel for school kids.
He has secured close to a million dollars in community grants for sporting clubs, schools, youth, medical and women's services. Jamie ensured the opening of the new sporting fields at Callan Park and while Mayor of Leichhardt built the first new sporting field in over 20 years.
Jamie was key in the community victory to overturn the appalling eviction of the Glebe Youth Service. After leading community campaigns in the area we now have more peak hour bus services in Annandale and well as multi million dollar upgrades to ferry stops in Balmain.
Jamie has also broken through red tape on issues like sporting fields where the Council failed to deliver. He has initiated a range of community actions including the Renewable Energy Inner West group and the Local arts projects group.
He has assisted thousands of local residents with a wide range of issues. He continues to focus on cleaning up politics, a more liveable community and a caring society.
